For our first unit we studied Value. Students chose an image and they did a value drawing using two different types of pencils with different harnesses. Students used the grid method to help them draw correct sizing and proportion. I think students did an awesome job on these. Way to go Art 1!

This unit was fast and friendly. We studied Artist, Henri Matisse, and took at look at his paper cut out stage. We talked about balancing positive and negative space while including geometric and organic shapes. Students chose a color scheme and they started "Drawing with Scissors." Once students had shapes cut out, they arranged their shapes in various compositions until they found a composition they liked. Add glue and voila they were fini!
We spent the first two weeks of Art class getting to know each other and getting comfortable with the class room. We played a lot of get to know you games and for our first art project, students created a banner. Their name needed to be a prominent part of the design and it also needed to include things about them. This project was a great way to start the year off right!
Can you believe school is almost out for summer! Here is our final project, a watercolor painting. Students created a painting that expressed part of their identity.
Students discovered how colors mix and blend by experimenting with oil pastels. First we made a color wheel and talked about color theory. Then students created an abstract design. Each space was filled with different color schemes: warm, cool, analogous and tints. We avoided mixing complimentary colors to side-step poopy brown colors.
During this unit of study, we talked about value and experimented with various drawing techniques used to create value. We started the unit off by doing value scales and a quick value drawing of a paper object. I tested students by telling them to create a paper airplane but NOT to fly it!! For the final project students used charcoal and created a still life drawing.
The main focus of this unit was to learn about recognizing shapes (positive and negative). We also learned about the art movement Pop Art. Each student received a delicious piece of candy to use as a reference, I tested their willpower and they did great! Students exaggerated the color and used sharpie at the end to give the painting a POP Art feel.
